Welcome Back to School!

D-E students started the new 2026-2027 school year with an eagerness that was palpable! Head of School Dr. James Calleroz White shared welcoming messages and his sentiments regarding his own excitement for this time of year with our community, noting, "Having students back always fills me with joy. Walking the halls and reconnecting with students, faculty, and staff across campus was wonderful. Hearing about their summers, and more importantly, their hopes and dreams for the year ahead grounded me again in the importance of the work we do. To say we are off and running is an understatement, and I love every second of it. This is what coming back to school should look, feel, and be like!”

Arts Highlights

Art & Design Teacher and former D-E parent Donwan Harrell kicked off D-E’s 2026-2027 Swartley Gallery Series with his “No Lesson Plan” exhibit – a brilliant collection of denim fashion designs and sketches spanning a career as a lauded clothing designer, creative director, entrepreneur, and educator.  The exhibit features designs from his fashion collections, including luxury denim brand, PRPS, carried by retailers such as Barney’s and Bergdorf Goodman and worn by celebrities from Jay-Z to David Beckham. One eye-catching piece was a denim jacket lined with graphic prints of movie stars, including Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, wearing Lee jeans in their film roles. These depictions helped turn denim into a fashion staple rather than utilitarian workwear. Also on view are athletic jersey designs that Mr. Harrell developed, as part of an international collaboration with Nike.

Traditions Highlights

Timeless traditions abound at D-E, and this time of year is no exception! The D-E Parents’ Association (PA) hosted their annual “Welcome Back to School” Barbecue on Leggett Field that drew a strong turnout and high engagement from across the D-E community! This year’s event included a bubble artist performance, a fire truck to explore on campus, a scavenger hunt, an interactive DJ, inflatable slides, yard games, a photo booth, as well as hot dogs, sandwiches, and cool treats. Ace the Bulldog, our D-E mascot, even made a special appearance. Many thanks to the PA for bringing our community together and helping to set the tone for another wonderful school year!
