The Parental Toolkit: A Virtual Micro-Cohort for NJ Parents Starting Nov 2
By Jessica Colucci, Psychotherapist, and Dr. Elisheva Cooper, Clinical Psychologist

You just spent 30 minutes negotiating with a 7-year-old... over shoes.
If every request in your house turns into a debate, take a deep breath. You are not doing it wrong. But here’s the truth: it’s not really about the shoes.
Why This Keeps Happening
When requests are built on negotiation, the back-and-forth only becomes more persistent. A child who gets their way just 1 time out of 10 learns that negotiating is worth trying every single time.
There’s also a simple language trap many of us fall into. Asking “Can you put your shoes on?” is technically a yes-or-no question, and your child is just answering honestly!
The Quick Clinical Shift
These two small changes can make a big difference in your daily routine:
1. Move the cue off of you.
Use a visual schedule to shift the reminder from your voice to the environment. When the schedule says it’s time for shoes, there’s no one to argue with.
2. Use “When-Then” instead of “If-Then.”
“If your shoes are on, then we go” sounds like a deal, and deals invite counteroffers.
Instead, try: “When your shoes are on, then we go.”
It’s a small change in wording that turns a negotiation into a simple expectation.
Introducing The Parental Toolkit
If this all feels too familiar, The Parental Toolkit was made with you in mind.
The Parental Toolkit is a 4-week virtual skills and support group for NJ parents, offering practical strategies and community support, created by therapists who are parents.
Most parenting programs are 100-person webinars or books that end up unread on your nightstand. The Parental Toolkit is different. This micro-cohort is strictly limited to just 6 parents, so every person receives direct access to two licensed clinicians who know your family by name.
The Details
Who It’s For: Parents of children ages 6–12
When: Mondays for 4 weeks, starting November 2
Where: Virtual. Live, small group.
You’ll Learn: Evidence-based strategies to help your child manage big emotions, set consistent limits, increase cooperation, and strengthen your relationship.
