Meet Gary D. Breslow, MD, FACS, Medical Director of The Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery, Bergen County Moms

Meet Gary D. Breslow, MD, FACS! Dr. Breslow is the Medical Director of The Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery and Injxcellence Medical Spa, which is launching its newest location coming spring 2022, at the Shoppes at Boulder Run in Wyckoff, NJ.

Dr. Breslow is a long-time resident and business owner in Bergen County, as owner and operator of The Breslow Center since 2005. We sat down with Dr. Breslow for a Q&A session, to help those who don’t know who he is, find out a little bit more about him.

Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself for those who don’t know you.

I am a board certified plastic surgeon. I live in Franklin Lakes with my beautiful wife of 22 years, Loren, and our 12 year old black lab, Murphy, and our 11 month old yellow lab, Reggie. Our 19 year old daughter, Alexi, and our 18 year old son, Jake, are both students at The University of Michigan. I love basketball and golf, and I could eat pizza for every meal if I had to.

What made you decide to become a plastic surgeon? What are your credentials?

I originally wanted to be a Neurosurgeon, until I realized I did not want to be a Neurosurgeon! When I was a freshman at Brown University I spent some time shadowing a neurosurgeon and thought that was what I wanted to do. Five years later, I did research for a neurosurgeon during the summer after my first year at NYU Medical School. I found it to be too depressing and I needed something more uplifting. I was distraught. I found myself thinking, “I don’t know what I am going to do now.”

I was lucky enough to have a friend whose cousin was a Plastic Surgery Resident at NYU. He was always telling me about these cases he was in that seemed intriguing, So during my second year of medical school, I would go to watch him operate and think, “Wow, this is really cool… This is what I want to do.” I took the year off between my 3rd and 4th year of medical school to do research in a plastic surgery laboratory. I then completed a combined 6-year residency in general surgery and plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. After my residency, I came back to New York and did a 1 year fellowship in microvascular reconstructive surgery at NYU’s Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery focusing on various reconstructive procedures, including breast reconstruction.

I am Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, I am a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I have been rated as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and New Jersey Top Doc for the past 6 years.

Why Bergen County? What is your favorite part of living and working here?

Being from Long Island, I never thought I’d live in NJ. However, my wife is from Woodcliff Lake. We started dating right before I had to move to Philly for my residency. So she said she would move there with me if I spent the rest of my life living in NJ! I would say she won, but I feel like I really did. I love it here. The people are incredibly down to earth. It’s just the best place and I love living here.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

First and foremost, I love the people – both the staff and patients – and plastic surgery is all about people. I have learned through my training and practice experience that there is nothing more rewarding than working with talented people and helping the patients. Beyond the amazing people, though, I love problem solving, and plastic surgery is essentially just surgical problem solving. There is also so much diversity in the field, with every patient being so different - different concerns, different goals, different anatomies. Each day affords me new opportunities to meet patients, examine and evaluate their concerns and goals, and then figure out a plan that will work and then execute it.

What was your vision behind Injxcellence Medical Spa? How was the “baby” born?

There is an ongoing joke about how many Botox or other injections I did when I was a resident, and the answer is zero! Injections and skin care were just starting to grow when I first went into practice. It didn’t take very long in practice for me to realize that there are certain results I can’t get with a knife. The truth is, there are many things that can be (and should be) treated with non-invasive skin care treatments, lasers, and things like that, and minimally invasive treatments like injections. I really embraced that I realized it’s an important part of what we do to help people feel and look their best. We started doing a lot of injections and we kept growing. But as I became much busier with surgeries, I made the decision to have others do the injections, starting out with Melissa who has been with me for the past 14 years. Melissa started out as the Practice’s medical assistant and then became the Practice’s Nurse when she received her RN degree. She always had an artistic eye. When I asked if she wanted to start doing injections, she was reluctant at first, but now she is rated as one of the top injectors in the country! We were lucky to bring on Veronica, who is also extremely talented and now also very busy. We had to expand again, most recently bringing on Brianna over a year ago, who is a PA, and not only does injections, but also does lasers. She has a dermatology background and has unbelievable knowledge of the skin.

We have this philosophy at The Breslow Center, where there is excellence in everything that we do. When I was at Penn, there was this expectation of excellence. Anything substandard didn’t fly. That’s the standard by which everyone around us is an A player, everyone here is at the top of their game. I came up with Injxcellence Medical Spa to combine “injections with excellence”. The injectors that we bring on must be at The Breslow Center standard. The quality of what they’re doing has to be at that standard. We’ve been very successful to the point that this second location is necessary to best serve the communities in Bergen County and beyond.

What do you think makes The Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery and Injxcellence Medical Spa as successful as it is?

While I can say my wife is the reason I came to Bergen County, I can easily say it’s the staff who makes The Breslow Center and Injxcellence Medical Spa so successful. There is no substitute for good people! We have a great staff, and I have been through staff that hasn’t been that great so it’s easy to spot the difference. It’s the expectation that everyone is an A-player and there is nothing less than excellence and quality in what we do here by providing the best care and results to the patients. I think that is very apparent with the people and the results we have.
