As moms, we’re experts at scheduling everyone else’s appointments, but our own health deserves the same attention. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to make breast care a priority.

Routine breast care is one of the best ways to stay healthy. The primary goal is to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage, when it’s most treatable, but regular care can also uncover other, noncancerous conditions.

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The good news is that early diagnosis offers the best chance of successful treatment. Here are two simple steps you can take today.

1. Schedule Your Mammogram

A mammogram is an imaging test that screens breast tissue for tumors or other changes that may be signs of breast cancer. Here’s what to know:

  • Current national guidelines recommend that women at average risk begin screening mammograms at age 40.

  • Women should continue to have a screening mammogram every one to two years.

Your doctor can help you decide when to start and how often to be screened based on your family history and other personal risk factors.

2. Know Your Normal and Report Any Changes

Mammograms are the most reliable screening tool, but it’s also important to know how your breasts normally look and feel. Talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • A change in the look or feel of your breast

  • A change in the look or feel of your nipple

  • Nipple discharge

If your doctor recommends additional imaging, such as a diagnostic mammogram or ultrasound, complete it before your appointment with a breast surgeon. This gives your surgeon time to review your images and reports before your visit.
