Launched in 2021, the Gateway Honors Diplomas Program enables Upper School students to pursue advanced coursework, independent research, mentorship, and experiential learning in a specialized field. Students who complete the program graduate with an honors diploma recognizing not only academic excellence, but also meaningful achievement in their chosen discipline.

Students may apply to the Gateway Honors Diplomas Program at the end of ninth grade or during tenth grade, selecting one of seven areas of concentration:
Arts
Humanities
Civic Engagement
Global Citizenship
Medicine
STEAM
Entrepreneurship
Once accepted, students work closely with faculty mentors to design a personalized academic journey that combines Honors and AP coursework with authentic learning experiences outside the classroom.
"Two of our core values—Love of Learning and Intellectual Risk-Taking—served as the inspiration for the Gateway Honors Diplomas," says Head of School Jalaj Desai. "We wanted to create opportunities for students to pursue their interests at a much deeper level while developing the knowledge and skills they'll need in college and beyond."
Learning Beyond School Walls
Perhaps the most distinctive element of the Gateway Honors Diplomas Program is its emphasis on experiential learning.
Rather than limiting education to textbooks and classrooms, students apply their knowledge in professional settings through internships, research, creative projects, and immersive experiences.
Depending on their area of study, students may:
Conduct research in a laboratory or medical setting
Launch a business or develop an entrepreneurial venture
Study abroad through global learning experiences
Work alongside accomplished artists, musicians, or other creative professionals
Design independent projects that address real-world challenges
These experiences culminate in the annual Gateway Honors Diplomas Expo, where seniors present their capstone projects to classmates, faculty, families, and community members—demonstrating both subject mastery and personal growth.
A Distinct Advantage in College Admissions
Today's colleges increasingly evaluate applicants through a holistic lens, looking beyond GPAs and test scores to understand how students have challenged themselves and contributed to their communities.
"Selective colleges want to see authentic engagement," explains Karen Ferretti, Director of College Counseling at SRDS. "They're looking for students who have explored their interests in meaningful ways, demonstrated leadership, and developed a clear sense of purpose. The Gateway Diploma gives students a powerful story to tell throughout the admissions process."
The program's success is reflected in the accomplishments of SRDS graduates. Members of the Classes of 2025 and 2026 earned admission to many of the nation's most selective colleges and universities, including Boston University, Brown, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, MIT, NYU, Vanderbilt, University of Pennsylvania, and Wake Forest, among many others.

While many schools offer capstone projects or specialized electives, Saddle River Day School's Gateway Honors Diplomas Program is unique in the region for combining rigorous academics, faculty mentorship, experiential learning, and formal recognition upon graduation.
