Raising Teenagers: Where Parents Learn How to Talk to Their Teens by Fern Weis, Parent Coach, Bergen County Moms

Yesterday I shared my epiphany moment, my wake-up call as a parent. I couldn't go back.

I had to go down into the muddy trenches, dig deep into myself, and learn a new way to be. For me, my child, my family. And I never looked back.

* * *

What did I learn? * to step back, stop enabling and let my kids take more responsibility for themselves. * to be less emotional (or to just take a break). They learned I would stay on topic and not be distracted from the issue at hand * to really listen to them. They began to trust me with their feelings. There was less nagging and fewer battles for control. This led to a better relationship and more cooperation * to accept that my dreams for them weren't always in their best interest. They learned to discover their purpose and potential. * to understand that boundaries were more important than feeling loved. They became more independent, and still felt loved. * Most important of all, I learned that the only one I can change is me. * * * Truthfully, it's not always smooth sailing. There's always going to be someone or something to push my buttons. That's the nature of life. With self-awareness and a boatload of new skills I was able to make changes in me. I'm grateful to be a different person than I was back then. As awful as our experience was, I am grateful. And now it's time to share the transformation with you.
