CoolSculpting: Does It Work and Is It Safe? By Cassie Thomas, FNP-C

Updated: 5 days ago

One would think that after maintaining a pretty consistent regimen of exercise and healthy eating, we would be able to look in the mirror and like all that we see. Unfortunately for many of us, it’s not the case. What is it about those stubborn areas around our thighs, our waistline, or upper arms that seem to be unaffected by all of the healthy diligence?

Luckily, recent technology in body contouring techniques has allowed us to stop wondering and simply get to eliminating it!

With CoolSculpting, you can take yourself further and achieve your dream body. But what exactly is it? CoolSculpting is a non-surgical FDA-approved method of removing stubborn fat. With the use of this unique cooling technology, you can target problem areas that bother you. And guess what? It’s permanent! It’s easy, too. Treatment can be completed in as little as 35 minutes, and since it’s non-surgical, there’s little to no downtime afterwards. And - If you’re still wondering how this technology selectively freezes fat cells but not any of the other tissues of the body it contacts – it’s because the carefully controlled temperature is specific for killing fat cells only. It’s perfectly harmless for our skin, muscles, nerves, etc.

As the nurse practitioner at Chuback Medical Group (and, ahem, the resident Coolsculpting expert of the practice), I am so happy to give you a little background of everything you can expect if you make the decision to do this for yourself!

Before Treatment

Once you arrive at our office, I will provide an absolutely free and thorough consultation for you. We will discuss the body areas that are of most concern to you and what your goal body would look like. CoolSculpting is currently FDA-approved to treat nine different areas including the abdomen, flanks, upper arms, bra fat, inner and outer thighs, submentum (that little fat pocket under the chin), and banana roll (excess fat where the back of the thigh meets the glute). You can go to work on any or all of these areas. The fact that our practice possesses two of the latest Coolsculpting machines means we can treat two areas at one time. We always say, “Treat double the fat in half the time!”

During Treatment

The first step before treatment is mapping out the body areas to be sculpted. This allows for great precision in placing the applicators. After the treatment area is mapped out, you’ll be ready to go! A pretreatment wipe is used to create a protective barrier between the applicator and the skin. In addition, a gel pad is then placed over the treatment area to protect the skin. The CoolSculpting applicator is placed onto the targeted area and once the treatment starts, you will feel a cold, pulling/tugging sensation for about 5 minutes. Soon after, the area will go numb, and it’s smooth sailing from there. The treatment lasts about 35 minutes and it is completely up to the patient how they wish to spend that time!

At Chuback Medical Group, we supply you with a TV that has Netflix and movies, healthy snacks, and coffee! Some patients even bring their laptops to do work. Once your treatment is over, the applicator is removed and a 2-minute massage is performed on the treated area. This post-treatment massage is an important part of the overall process as it helps to break up the now crystallized fat cells. This will also be helpful as the body begins to naturally excrete the damaged fat cells.

After Treatment

Since the CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, there is basically no downtime after treatment. Most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately. After the procedure, typical side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, and tenderness. However, these sensations are temporary and will slowly resolve after a few weeks. Optimal results will be seen 1 to 3 months after treatment. We typically have our patients return to the office in 3 months for re-evaluation. With each treatment, patients can expect to have the fat cells in the treated area reduced by 20-25%.

Again, what’s the best part? The results are permanent!
